Abstract

This article examines the Azorean Civil War of 1821–1831 from a geopolitical perspective, situating the analysis within the archipelago’s condition as an outermost atlantic region, the spatial dispersion of its islands, and the limited scale of their resources, combined with the historical processes of colonization, as structural factors shaping the islands and their elites as autonomous political units. Simultaneously, these factors influenced patterns of cooperation and rivalry among the islands. Drawing on checkerboard theory, the study demonstrates that the absence of regional centrality, further intensified by the establishment of the Capitania-Geral and by external political contexts, created the conditions for the outbreak of a regional civil war, during which political actors continuously adjusted positions and alliances to balance local power structures. This research contributes to literature by incorporating classical geopolitical concepts into the study of intra-regional island conflicts, providing a more systematic understanding of the interplay between territory and politics in ultra-peripheral settings, and lays the groundwork for future comparative research in analogous contexts.
